SEL study area
First SEL Field Congress — Italy, Alto Adige
6—11 July 2004
On 1 January 2004 the SEL (Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica) has chosen the Sesvennagruppe in South Tyrol (Italy) as its first Study Area because of the high biodiversity. After many years of study organized by the Tiroler Landesmuseum, this region was evaluated highly because of its species richness (more than 1000 Lepidoptera species).
The first SEL Field Congress has taken place in the SEL Study Area Sesvennagruppe in South Tyrol/Alto Adige, Italy, from 6—11 July 2004.

There was an official programme on natural history (geography, geology, botany) and the cultural specialities (cultural history) of the region and about the present stage of investigations on Lepidoptera but there was also plenty of time to collect together or individually. All necessary documents to guarentee a successful collecting time were provided for the participants and all collected specimens could be taken home for private use if the scientific data are made available to SEL and the public. SEL members were invited to use this opportunity of relaxed field work free of problems in one of the most biodiverse regions of the Alps and Europe.
Sincere thanks are given to all who made this successful, diverting, and perfectly organised meeting possible.
